A1M
The Project
Shotcrete were contracted by EKSPAN to work on a National Highways project to undertake repairs to two bridges on the A1M
The Solution
To ensure minimal disruption to highway traffic, work was carried out on nightshifts always keeping one carriageway open. To overcome this working restriction, we planned our shift work to maximise production while working on one side of the bridge at a time with phased switching of lanes with the National Highways and EKSPAN traffic management teams.
The repair works used a combination of hydro demolition and hand breaking to remove defective material. In the areas where hydro demolition was used, we implemented a robust system to collect and treat the surplus water before transporting it offsite for treatment.
These works were carried out in the winter months which caused challenges with overnight temperatures often being below freezing. Shotcrete managed this during reinstating works by selecting a product that delivered effective performance in low temperatures. We used Fosroc HBS and Fastfill for when the temperatures dropped below 5 degrees.
The Outcome
With collaboration across the project team, careful planning and selection on repair processes and products, our shift production rates delivered the works to meet client expectations.
