Littlehampton

The Project

Littlehampton’s Stage by the Sea, is a unique performance space like no other on the South Coast.

It features two curved, sprayed concrete shells each facing opposite directions. Designed by Flanagan Lawrence the shell inspired structures rise up from the landscape and echo the shapes of the sand dunes on neighbouring West Beach.

The Solution

  • Complex multi-curved structure
  • Structural load bearing curves
  • Sensitive location
  • Freeform concrete
  • High quality finishes
  • Three application types
  • No visible joints
  • Shotcrete’s “lost shutter system”
  • Severe budget constraints

The Outcome

Built to a limited budget, Stage-by-the-Sea comprises two striking concrete shells that have been optimised for acoustic and structural performance.

Sprayed concrete has been used to form the delicate shapes, yet still provide robustness. The material is acoustically perfect for focusing the music of performers using this community facility.
