Wembley
The Project
The Chiltern Railways site near Wembley Stadium in London required remediation works, adding soil bank stabilisation and a new retaining structure to protect
the rail network below.
The existing top footpath also required reconstruction and stabilisation due to frequent traffic. Chiltern Railways approached TPS Carillion and Shotcrete Services to provide long term and reliable solutions for this site.
The requirement was to install a cost effective retaining structure that would enable fast installation and meet design requirements on this sensitive location.
The Solution
The objective of the work was to provide a structural sprayed concrete layer to prevent the soil bank from encroaching on the rail network below, upon completion of soil nailing and stabilisation works by others.
The Outcome
The first operation was to prepare the surface at the concrete toe. An ABG membrane was then be installed against the embankment for the concrete to be sprayed upon with weep holes set into the base of the concrete wall to allow the flow of water into the storm drainage layout.
Following this, “spider” fixings were be screwed onto new and old soil nails. A393 mesh was installed and secured to the spiders 4 H16 bars. A 225mm thick C32/C40 steel fibre reinforced concrete wall was then sprayed to the bank.
Once complete, the void between the mesh facing and sprayed concrete wall was filled with ballast.
