Werrington
The Project
As part of Network Rails £1.2billion East Coast Upgrade, they planned to increase capacity for passenger trains on the East Coast Main Line by building a new two-track railway line that dives under it at Werrington, north of Peterborough.
The Solution
The layout and access to the working areas was extremely complex requiring line blocks and hour by hour coordination between subcontractors to achieve our goals.
By using our multi skilled teams to their maximum efficiency we were able to spray over 70m3 per day at times meaning the works progressed at record speeds.
In order to reach the works on the south ramp we had to run live concrete, air and accelerator lines through sleeves below live running lines to reach the works, and this was repeated for 6 pumping locations along the extensive section of works.
Despite national lockdowns due to COVID-19, work progressed well. Changes to working procedures and processes, as well as some innovative thinking allowed our colleagues to continue to work safely throughout lockdowns.
The Outcome
Being an infrastructure project, the programme was extremely tight with key contractors needing to overlap at specific dates in order to progress logically and on time. Through daily and weekly meetings and immaculate record keeping by the site teams we managed to complete our works ahead of programme and with zero defects.
Our highly trained foreman received an award for his work during the project upholding our key Heath and Safety values throughout the project.
